Certainly, a student can gain great value from working on a campaign. Whether or not that value is worth the loss of a semester depends on the experience gained. Many volunteers are asked to do very mundane tasks, such as addressing mail, sorting mail, posting signs and dropping literature. The relationship that the student has with the campaign manager or candidate must be such that the work and learning experience is meaningful before an investment like a semester off should be considered.
